Zenhouse  (Audio CD)
by Jonas Hellborg

Less is more is the philosophy of Swedish 'fusioneer' Hellborg and his long time collaborator Shawn Lane. Hellborg has worked with The Mahavishnu Orchestra (and mentor John McLaughlin), Michael Brecker and Michael Shrieve.

Hellborg plays Ovation acoustic double neck bass guitar on this sparse, atmospheric recording inspired by North Indian classical music, also featuring Shawn Lane on Ovation acoustic guitar.

4Zen House - Intense, ambient, exotic  Feb 04, 2002
By Corey
Such a high level of musicianship from these two yet again. I am continually impressed with Shawn Lane. I have been blown away by Shawn on Time is The Enemy and my personal favorite Two Doors, and with this intimate acoustic set was sonically entranced. The 4 pieces slowly build and then wane as these 2 weave intricate patterns of exotic/eastern melodies.

The highlight for me is the final piece where the two inject some seriously tasty runs with some pace - this is a nice change from the slower, intense emotional build of the previous pieces. At about 6 minutes into the last piece Shawn plays some truly devastating lines that will make your ears do a double take.

It is an interesting change from the usual electric set and apt. Q-258 provides the solid background which further empowers the intensity of the total sonic palette.

Shawn has got to be one of the best kept secrets of guitar mastery!

4 stars only because I believe that 5 stars is for a piece that has held the test of time and remained in the collective muscial consciousness. This is certainly a must have for fans though.

Be inspired!

5zen indeed!  May 17, 2007
By crown of indica "buckethead noir"
first off,if you want balls-out guitar theatrics looks elsewhere because this performance was all about subtle intricasies.some will become bored with zenhouse because the music lives in a place where time, volume, and voice have an unprecedented ebb and flow:it can seem long on one occassion, short the next, and what you think is repetitive droning actually has minute differences in texture, etc.this album is for people who like to look at shawn lane and hellborg's playing under the microscope because it demands a trained ear to catch every breeze of wind that takes them from one section to the next.i think i read that shawn never plays fast on the entire thing, but that person must've only listened to the first couple tracks before giving up because towards the end of the story shawn blazes up the frets with his usually intricate speed, but with a soft touch--like he has cotton balls on his fingers.i'd say give this one a try if don't have an attention disorder and can chill for an hour.

5Zenhouse  Jun 15, 2000

Jonas Hellborg and Shawn Lane have done it again. This CD is from outer space. It is unhurried, elegant, and with a LOT of feeling. This music is like an expression of pure bliss...it is powerful yet in control. Fans of Hellborg and Lane will not be disappointed.

3The End...  Feb 04, 2011
By D.R.S.
When I first learned of this remarkable duo, it was from an issue of Guitar Player magzine. Thier mind blowing dvd "Paris" was featured as a must have for all guitar players. As a huge fan of John McLaughlin's Shakti, I was immediately smitten by it and began looking for other collaborations from Hellborg/Lane. The cd's "Good People in Evil Times" and "Transcontinental Icon" were just as rewarding as the dvd. I also loved "Kali's Son" as well even though it was recorded after Shawn's untimely death. These releases all had one commune thread, V. Selvaganesh on Kanjeer. I believe that it was his unrelenting and driving south-Indian polyrythmic playing that inspired the two fret-board wizards to new heights.Unfortunately Selvaganesh is not on "Zen House".So for the better part of an hour, some guy, named for an apartment, tries invain, to inject some percussion and movement into the pieces. Don't get me wrong, I like ambient music and it deserves more listens but it won't make it into the car's cd player. I know it's an earlier release then the afore mentioned cd's but the magic just didn't happen that night. There's no movement until the last 6 - 7 minutes when Shawn tries to salvage the evening. My contemporaries will understand when I say that for almost an hour, I expected to hear Jim Morrison lament "This is the end..." D.R.S.

5The Return of Raga Rock  Mar 06, 2010

I discovered this disk quite by accident in the Sony Metreon in SF in 2000. I was struck by the title and the starkness of the image on the cover, and although I was not familiar with the artists, I took a chance. I was visiting on business and had no CD's with me. Later, driving north through Redwood forests and Eucalyptus trees, I slipped the disk in and was delighted by what i heard. The fusion of the music with the ambiance of the sky high forest was transfixing--mesmerizing. An acoustic guitar and an acoustic bass engage in a long careful exposition of interchange and interplay around a tone center, and tone clusters. To me, I immediately thought of Northern Indian Sarod music. This music is meditative, contemplative in nature. You have to chill out, and let it be. If you are getting sleepy, then you aren't paying close enough attention. These guys are on top of their game. Give them a chance to let the magic happen. You need to be in the right setting, and you need to have the right set. But if you do, you can certainly appreciate where these guys are coming from. To this day, it is still one of my favorite recordings, and I have tried to turn many people on to it. See, there is a thing about darkness in the still of the night--that is when all the timid little creatures come out to feed and play--not in the light of the high noon--but in the gentle protective mantle of darkness. And that is what this music reminds me of--the timid little creatures that only venture forth in the still of the night.

The Importance Of Lighting In Interior Design

   by Jessica Ackerman

Everyone knows how important paint color, furniture choices and artwork are to interior design. One aspect of design that is often overlooked, however, is lighting. Lighting not only affects the brightness of the room, but it can also change the way a paint color looks, cast shadows in ways that make the room seem smaller and have an impact on the presentation of art work.

There is no light like natural light. If you are buying, building or remodeling, opt for as much natural light as possible. Oversized windows and skylights are two ways to get the most natural light. Of course, not everyone is in the position to be able to do that, so you'll have to work with what you have.

How much natural light do you get in your room? If the room in question faces north, you won't get as much natural sunlight as you would in a southern facing room. Rooms that face south get bright, natural light throughout the day. Rooms that face east will only have good natural light in the morning hours and western facing rooms will have the most light during the afternoon.

Once you are familiar with how much natural light is in each room, you'll be able to make informed choices about what additional lighting may be necessary. Keep in mind that rooms with little or no natural light will need artificial lighting - even during the day - in order to look their best. Here are some types of lighting to consider.

1. Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is perfect when you want to showcase a piece of art or a special piece of furniture or other item. Since light draws the eye, it will bring attention to the features in your room that you wish to highlight.

2. Hanging Light Features

Chandeliers and smaller hanging lamps can be beautiful as well as functional. A trip to the local home improvement store will quickly show you how overwhelming the choices can be. You'll want to select lighting that blends in with your existing décor. For example, a crystal chandelier in a country themed dining room probably isn't the best option. If you don't choose carefully, your lighting may stick out like a sore thumb and become more of an eyesore than a lovely accent.

3. Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is a good choice for a room that needs extra light throughout the day. Because the lighting won't interfere with the existing decor, it can work in almost any room. It provides abundant light without taking up a lot of space or interfering with other aspects of the room.

4. Lamps

Using lamps are a way to add not only additional lighting, but also punches of color. If possible, see how much light the lamp gives off before leaving the store. Many lamps serve as decoration more than as a light source and give off very little light. If you love the lamp, but it doesn't give off quite enough light, consider changing the shade which will usually solve the problem.

When decorating your home, remember how important lighting is, and give it the same thought and attention you give to the other details of decorating your home.
